Past Life: Guttering
Sourced by: Steve, local plumber
Size: The dimensions of this piece are 41cm X 41cm X 4.4cm
Materials: I folded a reclaimed copper gutter into this square structure and mounted it securely to a 9mm MDF board using a strong mirror adhesive. The corners of the metal are secured with a two-part epoxy resin glue. For a clean, flush wall installation, I hand-crafted MDF split battens, allowing the piece to be hung with just three screws. The split batten system is included in the price to ensure a straightforward at-home installation. The rusted surface was created using a vinegar and salt-water solution to accelerate the natural oxidation process, producing a rich, controlled composition of copper verdigris. To preserve the finish and prevent extreme flaking, I applied four layers of a high-quality UV-resistant fixative spray.
Disclaimer: My work involving rust is delicate. Although lightly fixed, the works are not fully protected against movement and shedding. The rust is not permanently sealed, allowing the works to evolve over time, getting richer.
Purchase: This product is only available to buy in person from Bath Spa University, Locksbrook Campus, Locksbrook Rd, Bath, BA1 3EL. Between the 5th - 13th June 2026.
